Our last taste of Quebec City entailed ripping down the tight streets of the historic quarter to reach the ferry to Levis on the south side of the river (it is quite amazing to see the way delivery and postal truck drivers handle the inhospitable topography and narrow passageways). The ferry itself seems to be used primarily by cyclists; it does accept cars but while we were onboard there were only two vehicles and at least fifty bikes. This being the case, it was a great opportunity to talk to people about cycling and our trip. Given our rudimentary French language skills these weren't our most articulate conversations but it was nice to share some camaraderie.
When we emerged back on land we were smacked by a brutish wind that continued to fight against us for the rest of the day. We made slow progress, occasionally stopping to complain about the headwind or marvel at the view of the north shore across the river.
Quebec is a 'must bike' province, and it shows, everyone is on a bike here. The towns and people are wonderful and would be worth visiting even if not for the gorgeous landscapes and velo-supportive roadways.
